3.2 Rule-Based Inference Module
A rule-based inference module has been developed based on the visual criteria listed in the previous section.These criteria are further summarized into the following rules to detect a possible drowning swimmer who:
Rule 1:moves slowly or remains within a small neighborhood [based on criteria (ii),(iv) and (v)];
Rule II:has nearly vertical body posture in water [based on criterion (iv)];
Rule 111:exhibits irregular and possibly fast limb movements [based on criteria (i) and (iii)]
Referring to the state diagram shown in Figure 3,the three rules are selectively applied at each state to promptly detect possible drowning incidents and avoid false alarms by analyzing each swimmer's movement and body posture.The initial state for
a newly appearing swimmer is `Normal condition'.At this state,only Rule I is used to test the swimmer.As long as the swimmer moves continuously,the system assumes the swimmer is not in danger.Only when the swimmer is detected to be moving unusually slow,i.e,satisfying Rule I,the system suspects the beginning of a possible drowning.In addition to Rule I,the system will also test the swimmer using Rules II and LII.If all the 3 rules are satisfied,the swimmer is considered to be in `Possible
drowning state'.The system triggers alarms after the swimmer remains in `Possible drowning state' for a period longer than a preset duration.
We will now illustrate these roles using a video clip of simulated drowning.In this clip,a swimmer,enclosed by a black ellipse,swims in breaststroke continuously till about frame 140 when he starts getting into difficulty.
