Dolphins live in the ocean,but they are not fish.They are warm-blooded mammals and must have air to breathe.The babies are born alive and drink milk from the mother's body.It took millions of years for the dolphins to develop as it is today.
Dolphins live in groups,and speak to each other in their own language.That is a high sound and many singers love to learn this beautiful “song”.Their sound seems to have different functions,such as warning each other of danger or showing kindness to others.Dolphins also use sound to help them find their way around,and to help them find food.In this way they are like other animals,such as bees and birds.But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals.We now know they do not use their ears to receive their sounds,but the lower part of the mouth,called the jaw.Dolphins have bigger brain in proportion to their body size than humans have and they live a long life—at least 20 or 30 years.
Strangely,dolphins seem to like man,and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its frindship with people.
there is a story about sailors in the 19th century.In a dangerous part of the sea off New Zealand,they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack.From 1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the sea and showed it the way.Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack.He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area except for The Penguin.
Today,some people continue to kill dolphins even the mother and babies,but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.Dolphins are very gentle and playful with each other and with humans,they are our lovely friends,let's own the same beautiful world with them forever!
