【原题辨析】 The reason why he failed is because he was too careless.【疑问】此处为什么不用that？ It was for that reason , I suppose , that the book took a long time to come out.【疑问】是不是如果前半句"that reason" 前没有"for"，划线处就可以用"why"？这句是不是一个强调句型？麻烦老师能帮我分析一下reason后关系词什么时候用that、why、because吗？谢谢！：）

第二个句子你理解得很正确，这是个强调句。试着把It was .... that 去掉，再把插入语I suppose去掉，句子即成为：The book took a long time to come out for that reason. 这本书花了很长时间出版是因为那个原因。若把for去掉，即变成了：It was that reason why the book took a long time to come out. 是个定语从句，但我认为应该把it 改为 that/ this ；把that 改为the 更恰当些。
reason后接定语从句可以用that/ which(在从句中作主语或宾语), 或者是why/ for which(在从句中作原因状语),，但不能用because。
例如：
The reason that / which he explained at the meeting was acceptable. (taht / which 在定语从句中作 explain 的宾语) 他在会上解释的原因是可接受的。
The reason why / for which he didn't come on time was that he had an unexpected guest. (why / for which 在定语从句中作原因状语) 他没有准时来的原因是他由一个意想不到的客人。
