In Chorus of Mushrooms by Hiromi Goto, each character builds their identities as Japanese – Canadian by different methods. The story states the three generation of women conflicted by the problem of being a Japanese and a Canadian.Naoe and keiko both have different level of feelings about their unique identity. The granddaughter Murasaki struggles in the position between the two extremes and her identity as a Japanese -Canadian.
Keiko is one of the outstanding characters in the story because she is kind of a person that would do whatever to fit in the society,no matter it is right or wrong. This character makes reader more memorable. For instance,Keiko chooses not to speak Japanese with anyone in order to fit in the Canadian culture.“If you live in Canada, you should live like a Canadian and that’s how I raised my own daughter.”(Goto 189) Furthermore, the writer mention Keiko as a typical Canadian-Japanese which means she’s Canadian inside her mind, but having an Asian looking outside.Keiko chooses to renounce her Japanese root. She behaves like there is nothing different about her and other Canadian. The purpose of doing this is to create a culture conflict for her,and this is the most interesting characteristic that she owns.
While Keiko behaves like there is nothing different from the other Canadian, her daughter Murasaki does not avoid her Japanese identity.Instead, she tries to understand her own family history. She is a Canadian inside, but because of her Japanese appearance, she always been treated as ‘others’.Marisaki needs to face the cultural conflict between Keiko and Naoe.Keiko behaves like a Canadian while Naoe behaves like Japanese. As a result,Murasaki struggle between two lives, one as a Canadian, and one as a Japanese. And she has two names, her mother call her Muriel but her grandmother call her Murasaki.
Unlike Keiko and Murasaki, the life style of Naoe shows clearly that she is not ready to accept the new country. Not only she does not feel that she belongs there, but also does not show any interest in the new culture, the people, the language or the food in Canada.Instead of learning English she insist on speaking Japanese loudly all day long, she tries hard to keep her way,She knows a little bit of English but refuses to speak it:“I could speak the other to her,but my lips refuse and my tongue swells in revolt."(Goto 15) As the result she finds her approaches of being a Japanese-Canadian,and then she leaves her house and travels many places to enjoy her Canadian life.
