the real Chinese you were never taught in school
How much Chinese language do you know? How many idioms and hidden rules have you mastered? Those eager to speak as fluently as a native can test their language knowledge in a new book,Niubi – The Real Chinese You Were Never Taught in School.
Published by Penguin last month,Niubi (Newbie) presents a wide array of colorful vernacular phrases used by Chinese people of all ages in casual conversations. These are expressions usually not heard in formal language but hugely popular when making small talk.
The book is a collection of slang words that the author learned from friends and from personal experience during her lengthy stay in Beijing; words used when flirting and dating, fighting and partying and all the swear words you will never read in a textbook.
The book, dotted with interesting paintings, anecdotes, related cultural lessons and contextual explanations,is likely to whet the appetite of those planning to travel to China, students of the language,or those who just enjoy talking dirty in another language.
Niubi presents an updated accumulation of local vernacular and trendy but vulgar expressions such as "grass mud horse," "do push-ups" and even "mountain stronghold." Even some Chinese are not familiar with many of the phrases linked to the country's present grass-roots culture.
"It is perhaps the first book of its kind published by a formal publishing house," author Eveline Chao told the Global Times,"I know there are similar books available in the US,but most of them are booklets or pamphlets."
"One of the best ways to know the true realities of a culture,in all its ordinariness and remarkableness,is to learn slang and modern expressions in the everyday speech being spoken on the street."
Born in Taiwan and raised in the US,Chao is currently a freelance writer and editor in Beijing. She writes for several newspapers and magazines that specialize in business.
