Cashing In on a Good Deed
I gave up my seat on the bus to an elderly man the other day. When he sat down I said,“That will be one yuan ,please.”Well, actually, that didn’t happen.I did give up my seat, but I didn’t ask for any money in return. It would be silly to do someone a good deed and then ask them to pay for it,wouldn’t it?Well, maybe not.
Since2007,a college in Hunan has been“paying”students for doing good deeds. If a student does an hour of volunteer work,he or she is given three“virtual”coins.Donating blood gets a student six“virtual”coins, and returning a lost item can garner a student up to fifteen“virtual”coins. These coins are deposited in what the college calls a“morality bank,”and can later be redeemed for certain benefits such as extra tutoring.
The idea behind the“morality bank”is to get students involved in volunteer work and in doing other good deeds. It’s an odd idea, but it seems to be working.About11,000 students have deposits in the bank, and 80 percent of the students say that getting the coins makes them more enthusiastic about doing good deeds.
A healthy society depends on people cooperating with each other and helping each other. We do good deeds because it’s the right thing to do.The college may recognize that, but their “morality bank”is actually treating good deeds as a commodity:something that has a monetary value ,Their bank even issues loans. One student borrowed some coins from the bank to get a ticket for a concert. He repaid the loan later with volunteer work.
It’s a sad statement about society when you can put a price on kindness, generosity, and honesty. These are things that should come naturally to us in our everyday behavior. So paying for good deeds like the college is doing, may actually be harming society.Students may begin to think,“Well,I’d like to help, but what’s in it for me?”
A good deed,as they say,is its own reward.Cashing in just cheapens its value.
