With the fire danger across the region increasing, fire crews are on edge about all of the fireworks that come along with the Fourth of July.We hear a lot of warnings about how easily fireworks can start wildfires. So today with the help of a fire crew here at Spokane's fire training center we put those warnings to the test.We bought sparklers, roman candles, and a few other kinds of fireworks, then gathered some brush, and brought it all to the fire training center; where we ran through a couple different scenarios. This groundbloom ignited inside the training building and launched in all directions. Some of the sparks landed on a pinecone, which started to smolder.Surrounded by fire-fighters,we moved outside where the results of fireworks mixing with dry brush were more immediate. The second the sparkler dropped to the ground the grass ignited.Next we launched a tube of Roman Candles. Before it was done we had a fire burning and spreading fast.Again we had a crew standing by to help out.
They also showed us you don't have to light the fireworks in the dry grass to cause a problem.Fire-fighters say a lot of fires start when fireworks are lit on pavement.and then spin or drop sparks into nearby grass. It surprised us how quickly we saw flames from the fireworks. But not the fire-fighters who helped us out.

On speaking to a number of animal rescue centres the feeling is that any groups involved in animal welfare, from veterinary practices to charity organisations, should be contacted and asked for their endorsement on putting forward the message to the Government that the sale of fireworks must cease and only licensed events be allowed to continue a small number of times a year.To have any impact, this needs media support.
