THERE have been constant questions over whether Cristiano Ronaldo,as one of the world’s most expensive players,deserves the high pay he receives from Real Madrid.But the Portuguese gave a sort of answer when he became the first player to score 40 goals in a single Spanish season.
Ronaldo scored twice in his team’s huge 8-1 victory over Almeria on May 22,to finish the 2010-11 league season with a total of 40 in only 34 appearances.Madrid’s Hugo Sanchez (1989-90) and the Athletic Club’s Telmo Zarra (1950-51) shared the previous record,of 38 goals in one season.His goals this season saw him comfortably win the Pichichi (最佳射手) award and also seems certain to earn his second European Golden Boot,which he won while at Manchester United in 2008.
However,Ronaldo said that he was disappointed with how the campaign had turned out,as his personal success had not helped his team win the Li Liga (西甲) and the Champions League titles.Madrid lost out to FC Barcelona in both races.
“If you ask me if I’m very happy with the season,then I have to say no,because Madrid aspire to win every title,” he told Spanish newspaper AS.
“But next season we’ll help Madrid win more titles than this.”
Even Barcelona icon Johan Cruyff praised Ronaldo for his “tremendous achievement to score that many goals in such a strong league”.However,the retired Dutch footballer said team success is more important than individual honor.He warned the player that he would have to do better if he was to match his Barcelona rival Lionel Messi.
“We should not forget that football is a team sport.If Ronaldo does even better next year,but Madrid again finish second,nobody will be happy,” he wrote in Spanish newspaper El Periodico de Catalunya.“Messi has also scored a lot,although he has not found the net as often as Ronaldo.He has made the final of all the big competitions,though.”
