There has been much discussion on the botanical classification of pumpkin,and there is no clear anatomical description for the crop.Cultivars of at least four Cucurbita species,argyrosperma,maxima,moschata,and pepo have been marketed as pumpkins in the US (Maynard and Hochmuth,1997).Cultivars of Cucurbita maxima,C.moschata,and C.pepo are also marketed as squash.Weed interference is a major limitation to pumpkin production in the southeastern United States.Pumpkins and other cucurbits are not competitive against weeds in their early stages of growth.This is exacerbated by the wide plant spacing used for the crop and the lack of effective herbicides for pumpkins.Clomazone is registered for use on pumpkins in the US and is particularly useful,because it controls broadleaf weed species that are not controlled by the other herbicides (Liu et al.,1992).Barth et al.(1995) reported that clomazone at recommended rates reduced pigment contents which lowered pumpkin quality.Cultivar differences in clomazone tolerance have been reported for several crop species (Al-Khatib et al.,1994:Boydston and Kraft,1991; Hopen et al.,1992; Keifer,1989).We observed apparent differences in clomazone injury between pumpkin cultivars when the herbicide was used for weed control in a pumpkin cultivar trial (Keinath and DuBose,2000).The objectives of these experiments were to develop a glasshouse system useful for evaluating pumpkin response to clomazone and assess the relative tolerance of pumpkin cultivars.
