Because three-phase circuits have just three or four wires,but the three armature windings have six terminals,some of these terminals must be connected together.There are just two practical ways of connecting these windings:either in a wye (Y),or in a delta (△).These connections are not limited to generator windings but apply as well to transformer windings and to loads,as we will study in other sections.
In the Y connection,the primed terminals are joined at a common node,marked N for neutral.In practice,this fourth node may be at ground.Clearly,this Y connection results in a four-wire circuit.Incidentally,in the future we will not show the primed terminals but will use N instead.The Y connection got its name because of the practice of showing the windings in the shape of a Y to indicate that the corresponding induced voltages differ in phase angle by 120º.Of course,in a generator the windings are not arranged in the shape of a Y.
