2-1 Introduction
Three-phase circuits are very important because almost all electric power is generated and distributed three-phase.The basic component of a three-phase circuit is an ac voltage generator,also called an alternator,that produces three voltages of the same peak values but with phase angle differences of 120º.The alternator windings are interconnected such that the electrical energy goes out over either three or four wires.
As will be seen,a three-phase circuit has advantages as compared to a single-phase circuit---a circuit having just a single voltage supply.It also has advantages over a two-phase circuit,which is a circuit energized by an ac voltage generator that produces two voltages of the same peak value but that are phase-displaced by 90º.Except for a few special applications,three-phase circuits are more advantageous than circuits of a greater number of phases.As a result,three-phase power generation,distribution,and utilization will be important for the foreseeable future.
2-2 Three-phase voltage generation
As stated,a three-phase voltage generator produces three voltages having the same peak value but differing in phase angle by 120º.Naturally,all three voltages are of the same frequency.These voltages may be across just three wires,to form a three-wire,three-phase circuit.Or these voltages may be between three wires and a neutral wire,to form a four-wire,three-phase circuit.We will now consider the generation of these voltage.
For a balanced three-phase circuit,three sinusoidal voltages add to zero at every instant if they have the same peak value and frequency but are phase-displaced by 120º.This means that the vertical heights of the three curves add to zero at every point along the horizontal axis.The fact that these sinusoids correspond to voltages has no bearing on their sum being zero.
