A RACE TO THE SOUTH POLE
Robert Scott was an English explorer. He led a team to explore Antarctica in 1901 -- 1904.His group traveled farther south than anyone else had ever gone, and he made maps and gathered information on rocks and climate. When he returned to England,he received a hero's welcome.
A few years later,he decided to organize another exploration trip.He wanted to be the first person to reach the South Pole.He and his group sailed in June 1910,but when they reached Australia, they learned that Amundsen,a Norwegian, was also on his way to the Pole. Then the two men began their race to the South Pole.
Amundsen was an experienced explorer. He planned everything very carefully. He took sleds and dogs with him.In the past,as some dogs became weak, some explorers had even killed the dogs for food for themselves and the other dogs.Amundsen did this too,and it helped him reach the Pole.Later people called him “dog eater.”Unlike Amundsen,Scott only took a few small ponies and a few dogs.He thought his new motor--sleds could pull most of the supplies, but the motor--sleds quickly broke down in the cold temperature.
On January 17,1912,Scott and his men reached the Pole, only to find a tent and the Norwegian flag. They were not the first ones to reach the South Pole. They had lost the race. The next day, they started the journey back to their base camp, pulling their heavy sleds. On their way many of the men became so weak and hungry that had no strength to pull the sleds any more.
Three months later people found three dead bodies, some letters, some photographs, and Scott's diary. In his diary he told how one of his men,who was very ill,had tried to save the others and left their tent to die with the words,"I'm just going outsider and may be some time.”They buried the frozen bodies in the place where they found them.Today Scott is still remembered as one of the great explorers.

He took sleds and dogs with him.In the past,as some dogs became weak, some explorers had even killed the dogs for food for themselves and the other dogs.Amundsen did this too,and it helped him reach the Pole.Later people called him “dog eater.”Unlike Amundsen,Scott only took a few small ponies and a few dogs.He
thought his new motor--sleds could pull most of the supplies, but the motor--sleds quickly broke down in the cold temperature.
