A solution to this system problem is the use of fast-acting
solid state circuit breakers.Power semiconductors such as
IGBTs and IGCTs are commercially available in voltage and
current ratings that are compatible with the requirements for a
ship distribution system.The microsecond response time of
power semiconductors allows them to limit fault current to
low levels,and consequently limit the system energy that must
be managed (i.e.dissipated).Such breakers can have
“universal” configurations suitable for both DC and AC
applications,and can be scalable for a wide range of ratings as
typically required for a ship power distribution system.Their
use can result in a superior power system that enables the full
capabilities of a power converter-based ship distribution
system.
Solid state circuit breakers can also offer advantages when
used in traditional ship power systems.Their fast response
provides current limiting,so that faults are limited to a
selected level rather than the level dictated by the supplying
generators.This offers particular advantages for medium
voltage parallel generator lineups where peak available fault
current can exceed the ratings of typical electromechanical
breakers.Among the benefits of low (limited) fault currents
are low magnetic and thermal stresses on distribution
components (e.g.cables,bus bars),and low energy delivered
to faults resulting in a safer overall system with reduced
component costs.By limiting fault current to low levels (e.g.
2x rated) the time required to isolate a fault will also be short,
typically less than 1ms as opposed to many AC line cycles
(typically 100ms for a MV system).The short duration of
fault events results in minimal line voltage disturbances seen
by loads on the common distribution bus.The ability of loads
to “ride through” a fault without interruption provides
improved performance without a major investment in
protective hardware such as an ABT or UPS.
This paper describes the primary interruption characteristics
of conventional electromechanical circuit breakers.It also
describes topologies and performance requirements (and
limitations) of solid state circuit breakers and their benefits to
new ship power systems.
