Time and Tide Wait for No Man
“Time and tide wait for no man.”This is a proverb we learned in high school.Simple as it is,it tells an everlasting①truth of life.Since time never stops for anyone or anything,all people have to give in to its quick-passing steps.The pressing problem then is this:how to make good use of it?
People may have different attitudes towards it.Some think time is never to be used up.If today ends,there is still tomorrow.So they do not think it necessary to finish today's work within the day.They always put it until tomorrow.In the end they will succeed in nothing.Another sort of people do not think this way.They know the limit of time.Although as a whole,time is infinite② but it is finite③ to every single person.An average person may have 70 years of life,much of which has to be spent on eating,sleeping and other ordinary matters.That which one uses on study and work takes only a small part.But it is this small part that really counts.Whether one is successful or one's work is meaningful④ depends on it.
Now the answer to the question raised in the first paragraph seems clear.To work hard and never leave today's work till tomorrow are the best ways to spend time.Haste Makes Waste 　　As we all know,speed is important in our daily life.We always emphasize how important it is to do everything efficiently.There is nothing wrong in this,but doing something in a hurry can also land one in a predicament.
　　In Chinese,there is an idiom:"You can't eat hot tofu in haste." In some situations,we should not think of quickness only.When we act too quickly,we are more likely to make mistakes and end up with poor results.
　　Take the workers in a factory for example.If one of them attaches too much importance to quantity,s/he quickens her/his step and sometimes,even deliberately,leaves out one of the procedures in production.As a result,the quality of these products is affected.
　　An example of this can be found in an old Chinese fable.Once there was a farmer.He planted a lot of rice shoots.He yearned for the harvest.One day,he pulled them up.All of the rice shoots were dead.Another allegory warns that a house can't be built from the top floor.It should be constructed firmly on the foundation and advanced step by step.And think of an example from our student life.Most spelling mistakes are a result of going to fast and not checking our work.Hence,it's better to do things more carefully than to do them quickly and carelessly.
　　I am not suggesting that we should ignore speed,but I do think it is equally important to pursue perfection－no doubt difficult in a culture when sooner means better.So please,keep these things in mind when doing your next task.欲速则不达
　　众所周知,速度在我们日常生活中至关重要,我们总在强调快速地做任何事情,这并没有错,但仓促行动也会使我们陷入尴尬的处境.
　　中文里有句俗语：“心急吃不了热豆腐”.确实如此.在一些情况下,我们不能仅仅渴求速度.每当做事较快时,人们就越会出错,反而事与愿违.
　　以工厂里的工人为例,如果他们中有人过分地注重数量,故意疏漏某个环节来加快进程,产品在这种情况下生产,质量就得不到保障.
　　此外,在中国的一则古老寓言中也可以找到这样的例子：曾经有一个农民,种了一大片麦苗,他急于求成,人为地把麦苗拔高,结果所有的麦苗都死了.万丈高楼平地起,根基扎实才能层层高升.学习中也一样.大多数拼写错误都源自写得过快而疏于检查.这些已足够证明,细心地做事远远要比做得快却粗枝大叶来得好.
　　我并非建议可以忽视速度,但我的确认为追求完美也十分必要,尤其在一个更快意味着更好的年代,要做到这一点无疑也是困难的.因此在进行下一项工作时,请牢记：欲速则不达.
