I was about 13.On the way home from school,Dad usually stopped at the store around the corner.Not always,but just often enough.He would ask,“Would you like an ice cream cone?”and I would say,“That sounds great,Dad!”He would hand me three dollars and I would run in to buy two ice cream cones.We'd eat then in the car.I loved my dad and I loved ice cream —— so that was heaven.
One day,we were heaking home,and I was hoping and praying for the beautiful sound of his offer.It came,“What about an ice cream today?”
“That sounds great,Dad!”But then he said,“Son,why don't you treat today?”
Three dollars!Three dollars!My mind turned.I could afford it.My monthly allowance was 15 dollars.But saving money was important.Dad told me that.And when it was my money,ice cream just wasn't good use of it.Then I said the awful words that have rung in my ears ever since.“Well,in that case,Iguess I'll pass.”My father just said,“OK,Son.”
Why didn't I think that this was a golden opportunity to give something back to my very kind father?Why didn't I think that he had bought me 90 ice cream cones,and I had never bought him one?But all I couldthink was“three dollars”!Now I agree that gratefulness sometimes costs a little more than“Thank you”.
The next day when we passed that corner,I said,“Dad,how about an ice cream cone today?My treat!”
