When I was a foreign teacher in China,every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about
China.One day the topic turned to saying “I love you”.I was shocked to learn that not one of my students
had said this to their mothers,nor had their mothers said it to them.“Does your mom love you?” “Of course
,”they answered.
“How do you know ”was my logical question.They responded that their mons cooked and always told them what
they were doing wrong to show their caring.I was stunned .So mon’s cooking and criticzing read out as “I
love you ”.“Then how do you say ‘I love you ’to her?” They agreed that getting good grades,followed by
god jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough,so I repeated these queries in classes over
time.Gradually,I began to get different response.Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their
moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl.When she came home from university,her mother met her
at the door and hugged（拥抱）her.This had never happened before,but her mom said,“Now that you have gone I
have more time to myself.I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it
was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family we all say “I love you” a lot .While it is true that we often say the words without having great
depth of feelings at that moment,it is almost like a blessing we give each other.Those three little words
carry a world of meaning ,even when said as a greeting,but most especially if they are the last words we say
to or hear from those we love.

我在中国做外教的时候,每天我教同学们英语而他们教我中文.一天我们探讨的话题是说“我爱你”,我惊异地发现没有一个学生对母亲说过,而他们的母亲也从没对他们说过.“你们的母亲爱你们吗?”“当然”他们回答,“你们怎么知道?”我随后问到,他们回答母亲经常给他们做饭,常常会告诉他们哪里出了错以示关心.我愣住了,母亲做饭和批评就能代替“我爱你”.“你们怎么对母亲表达‘我爱你’呢?”他们认为好的成绩和找到好的工作就可以表达他们的爱.
在我的文化里大多数人都善于表达,所以我时常会在课堂上重复这些问题,渐渐的,我开始得到不同的回应,他们中的一些开始渐渐与母亲交流情感.最让我引以自豪的是一个女孩的改变,当她从大学回到家,她母亲都会在门口迎接并拥抱她.而以前却从没有这样,但她母亲说“现在你离家在外,我有了更多属于我的时间,我注意到在有些地方的妈妈会和子女相互拥抱.这好极了,我决定要开始拥抱你.”
在家里我们都会说“我爱你”,我承认在大多数这样表达的时候,我们并未用情至深,就好像简单地彼此祝福一样.即使在打招呼时说,这三个简单的词承载了太多的意义,特别是在我们挚爱的人在弥留之际所说的或听到这最后的话语.
