王树栋、马小燕编著的《园林建筑》对园林建筑小品是这样定义的：“园林建筑小品是指园林中体量小巧、功能简单、造型别致、富有情趣、选址恰当的精美构筑物.”该书认为：“园林建筑小品一般都具有简单的实用功能,又具有装饰性的造型艺术特点.在园林中即作为实用设施,又作为点缀风景的艺术装饰小品.”我认为该书对小品的定义比较贴切,但在其特点的论述上有些偏颇.其实有很多小品仅仅具有观赏价值,比如壁画、雕塑等,有些才既有简单的实用功能,又有一定的艺术性,比如指路牌、坐椅、垃圾箱等.
