Historical documents record that Han-dynasty emperor Wendi once summoned the talented scholar Jia Yi back from exile to question him,This was regarded as the tale of a happy meeting between virtuous ruler and wise man.Li Shangyin,however,gives the story a different twist,unmasking rulers who knew not how to appreciate a true talent.Some of Li Shangyin's allusions to classical literature help to express his feelings more clearly.To refer back to "On a Painted Se",the third line recalls a story from Zhuang Zi about a dream he had.In the dream he became a butterfly and could freely go anywhere,but when he awoke,he found it bad been but a dream Zhuang Zi told this story to illustrate his notion that in the end life is nothingness.Here,in contem- plating his own lot,the implication is that Li Shangyin's life may be compared to this dream.The fourth line contains an anecdote from the Chronicle of the State of Huayang.In remote antiquity,an emperor by the name of Du Yu was forced to abdicate without fulfilling his life's ambition.When he died he became a cuckoo that would cry in the spring time until it spat blood.One may deduce that although Li Shangyin spent his whole life in pursuit of an Opportunity to fulfill his aspiration,his efforts were in vain,and all he could do was to pour his pain into his verses.This fifth line is a reference to a rather sentimental story from Records of Things by Zhang Hua,a noted scholar of the fourth century,about a mermaid whose tears fell as pearls.The allusions here all speak of Li Shangyin's own confusion,his grief,and disillusionment.Between the "Oh..." in the first line,and the doomful reverie" in the last,he generates a blurry sentimentality,the beauty of which,like pearls and jade,can be all-consuming.
But the use of allusions has a two-fold effect; whilst enriching apiece it may obscure meaning.Overuse result in riddles.Li shangyin’s best poems escape this and are beautifully worded depictions of his thoughts and emotions.Most importantly,they made a significant contribution to the development of Tang-dynasty poetry,broadening the vision of poetry in subsequent periods.These poems also have their shortcomings,but less than those of his imitators who produced empty verses by stringing together fancy phrases and far-fetched allusions.
