Abstract—The potential and effectiveness of the newly developedPareto-based multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEA) forsolving a real-world power system multiobjective nonlinear opti-mization problem are comprehensively discussed and evaluated inthis paper.Specifically,nondominated sorting genetic algorithm,niched Pareto genetic algorithm,and strength Pareto evolutionaryalgorithm (SPEA) have been developed and successfully appliedto an environmental/economic electric power dispatch problem.A new procedure for quality measure is proposed in this paperin order to evaluate different techniques.A feasibility checkprocedure has been developed and superimposed on MOEA torestrict the search to the feasible region of the problem space.Ahierarchical clustering algorithm is also imposed to provide thepower system operator with a representative and manageablePareto-optimal set.Moreover,an approach based on fuzzy settheory is developed to extract one of the Pareto-optimal solutionsas the best compromise one.These multiobjective evolutionaryalgorithms have been individually examined and applied to thestandard IEEE 30-bus six-generator test system.Several opti-mization runs have been carried out on different cases of problemcomplexity.The results of MOEA have been compared to thosereported in the literature.The results confirm the potential andeffectiveness of MOEA compared to the traditional multiobjectiveoptimization techniques.In addition,the results demonstrate thesuperiority of the SPEA as a promising multiobjective evolu-tionary algorithm to solve different power system multiobjectiveoptimization problems.Index Terms—Economic power dispatch,emission reduction,en-vironmental impact,evolutionary algorithms,multiobjective opti-mization.
