是云南、四川两省彝、白、佤、布朗、纳西、拉祜等民族的传统节日.时间在农历六月二十四或二十五日.关于火把节的传说很多,其中在彝族人民当中流传最广的有这样一个故事：很久以前,天上有个凶神叫斯热阿比,奉天王安天古兹之命,经常来到人间派粮派款,收租催税,敲诈勒索,激起了彝族人民的反抗.为了战胜凶神,大家推选了一位叫阿提拉巴的英雄同那个凶神作战.拉巴和凶神斗了九天九夜,终于杀死了凶神,为民除了害.天王闻讯大怒,就下“天虫”吃庄稼,妄图把人们饿死.此时正值彝历“虎丹”时节,洋芋结薯,养麦开花,包谷“背地”的时候.铺天盖地的“天虫”吃了三天三夜,眼看彝家的庄稼就要毁于一旦.此时大家又聚集在山头开会,商量高举火把,烧死“天虫”的对策.于是,彝族的男男女女、老老少少,人人举火把烧“天虫”.火把举了三天三夜,烧死了大部分“天虫”,保护了庄稼,夺取了丰收.少部分“天虫”躲进了庄稼地,为了预防它们再次遗害于民,每年“虎丹”时节彝族人民就高举火把.这样年复一年,形成了今天的火把节,也是彝族人民最为隆重的节日.届时,家家户户门前都要竖起一个火把.在广场中央堆砌起一个宝塔形火炬.选一根三四丈高的青松立在中间,四周用干柴分层堆砌成宝塔形,顶端放一根挂满红花、白饼、海棠的翠木.傍晚,男女老少手持大小火把,随锣声、号角声汇集于广场,将树塔点燃.顿时火光冲天,干柴烈火噼啪作响,与锣鼓声、欢呼声汇成一片,震撼山岳.火把节的第一天,人们选择又好又长的松木,劈成细条,中间加上易燃的松明,捆扎成火把.傍晚,各家门前的火把就点燃了,第二天的火把普遍要比第一天的高出一节.第三天是火把节的高潮,火把扎得又高又大,装饰得很漂亮.所有角落都照遍,以求照亮庄稼,消灭害虫,预祝丰收.人们高举火把,尽情歌舞,通宵达旦.
