MAN fights to control nature. Wild animals run to escape the guns of illegal hunters. These illegal hunters stay forever alert (警惕的) to the danger of being caught by mountain patrols (巡逻者). While these separate stories continue the Earth suffers at the hands of humans.
This is the struggle that is portrayed in the movie "Hoh Xil: Mountain Patrol" (Kekexili). The movie recently won the Special Jury Prize (评委特别奖) at the Tokyo Film Festival.
"Hoh Xil" is publicized as China's first Western-style adventure film. It tells a true tale of the life-and-death fight between illegal hunters and volunteers. The volunteers form a patrol team to protect the Tibetan antelope (藏羚羊) in Hoh Xil, a nature reserve in northwest China's Qinghai Province.
The volunteers team have patrolled Hoh Xil for three years without any support from the local government. They had to raise money themselves to buy guns, bullets and cars to fight the illegal hunters. The terrible living conditions also made their life very tough. Through the eyes of a young Beijing journalist, the film tells of a routine patrol that goes wrong.
Many moviegoers said that they could not help but cry while watching the film. Huang Lei, an established actor and lecturer at the Beijing Film Academy said: "I can sense from 'Hoh Xil' the honesty of the director, the actors and actresses. I can feel the inner strength of the film, its respect for goodness and beauty."
"Hoh Xil" is not a simple film only about the protection of wildlife. In the film, one also gets a sense of the danger of life in the wilderness. Its director Lu Chuan, who became famous two years ago with "The Missing Gun" (《寻枪》), said that he wanted to show how the average Chinese struggles for a better future.
