The selection and construction of geoparks have aroused wide public attention in China in recent years.
Jiang Jianjun, director of the Geological Environment Department of the Ministry of Land and Resources, explained what a real geopark is and its relevance in promoting social progress and well-being.
"Ancient classics always describe man's paradise as a place of milk and honey," Jiang said,"And a geopark is just such a paradise."
He believes geoparks should be a paradise for people to live in and enjoy life.
Jiang said it was his conviction that human beings should live in harmony with water, atmosphere, rocks, soil and all creatures.
He pointed out that a geopark is a comprehensive concept with many functions.
"We built geoparks not only to protect geological remains, but more importantly,to raise public awareness of loving the earth, nature and the living environment," Jiang said.
Jiang explained that the latest criteria for a geopark cited by the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) include six aspects, such as geological scenery, management system, environmental education, geological tourism, sustainable development of regional economy and transport capacity.
"Therefore, the concept of a geopark is not that we simply enclose land with geological remains for sightseers to visit but that we turn the place into a classroom,a tourist attraction, and a means of promoting the welfare of local people," Jiang said.
Jiang said the geoparks' function of protecting geological remains would never run counter with the functions of education and tourism.
"It is our principle to balance protection and exploitation when we build geoparks," Jiang said.
"The construction of geoparks has to be closely linked to the development of the local economy and education."
Jiang said in building geoparks, great importance should be attached to the protection of the unique culture and species of a place.
