Is Being a Civil Servant an Ideal Job?
Civil service is often considered a heavenly position for many.It includes a great number of benefits that other jobs do not offer. However, while there are many advantages, there are a few disadvantages on the downside as well.To conclude whether becoming a civil servant is an ideal job asks for one to thoroughly navigate and consider both the advantages and disadvantages of this job.
The most well known advantage of being a civil servant is stability. While the economy fluctuates and the market has its ups and downs,a civil servant is often left unaffected in terms of employment and wages.Although sometimes the government would lower civil servants’ wages, this is often done collectively to compensate for the downturn of the economy, such as in the face of a massive financial tsunami.Jobs within the government are also known for their pleasant working environment as they are bounded by strict rules and legislation, and therefore supervised closely, and they have relatively better working hours.Employees in private companies often have to work longer hours, even at ungodly hours,to meet their employers’ expectations.Government services are habitually an extension of the ideals of civil service.Free medical care, dentist care, general healthcare, retirement bonuses, paid vacations, and so forth, are benefits that people who will to become civil servants cannot overlook.
However, opportunities for employment when it comes to becoming a civil servant are few.Due to the many benefits it provides, the competition is huge and the government hires significantly fewer employees compared to private companies outside. There are many hiring requirements one has to fulfill and many registration processes that have to be gone through. Most positions within the boundaries of civil service require the demonstration of adequate knowledge, educational background, competencies, and perhaps even an extraordinary interview performance before one is open to the seat.Climbing the ladder is also challenging,as civil servants have slow progression – ambitious people should best consider working in the private sector where progression is faster in the expense of job stability.
In overall, being a civil servant is only an ideal job when you are well suited to the type of benefits it offers.Obviously, there are fewer rewards than jobs in the private sector are able to provide, but simultaneously, there are fewer risks one has to take.Stability and security are the two major benefits of civil service that should be first considered. If you are an adventure taker, being a civil servant may not be the ideal job to you,but for one who craves a nice retirement and lots of holidays, being a civil servant is definitely the correct decision.
