《双城记》创作于19世纪50年代,正值狄更斯创作的高峰期,也是英国资本主义经济迅速发展的时期.资本主义发展带来的种种罪恶和劳动人民生活的贫困化,使英国社会处于爆发一场社会大革命的边缘.早在三、四十年代,工人阶级为了争取政治权利,就在全国范围内展开了规模宏大的“宪章运动”.这次被列宁称为“世界上第一次广泛的、真正群众性的、政治性的无产阶级革命运动”虽然失败了,却让狄更斯清醒地意识到50年代的英国,与18世纪末的法国社会非常相似,下层群众中普遍存在着一种愤懑与不满,人民的革命情绪大有一触即发之势；为此,他决定创作一部以法国大革命为背景的小说,用以针对英国的社会现实,为同时代的英国人提供借鉴,正是在这种背景下长篇小说《双城记》于1859年问世了.既然是为了警示英国人而又以法国历史为题材,因此狄更斯将故事的发生地点确定在巴黎和伦敦这两个城市,小说也由此得名《双城记》
