two week ago my grandfather passed away.most of my friends have gone through the same loss but my grandfather held a unique position in my life.for me,my grandpa was a mentor who encouraged me to work hard and write well.i'll never forget the first time i read a lengthy piece of his writing.it was when i applied to princeton and he offered to write to the university on my behalf.he wrote in beautiful cursive and used poetic language,unafraid of sounding too"flowery".i read the letter out loud so i could hear the melodious sounds.my grandfather valued hard work and discipline.every time he came to visit us in new york,he would commend my brothers and me on our grades,music or whatever else we were doing.this made me very proud because i knew he had worked hard to succeed during the great depression when our country was poor.he also had many military medals from fighting in the navy in word war 2.at the funeral,a close friend of my grandfather approached me and said that my grandfather had spoken with him about a small book i had written.after it was printed i had sent it to my grandfather but received no reply.i did not think much of it,but this man told me that my book brought tears to my grandfather's eyes.my grandfather said he was proud of me.i feel glad his friend came and told me how he felt otherwise i would not have known.now i feel even more obliged to write well because i know he is proud of me every time.
