You are the cake?
Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did the universe/God do this to me?" Here is a message worth considering…
A young girl is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong - she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her, and her best friend is moving away.
Her Mother, in the process of baking a cake, asks her daughter if she would like a snack. The girl lights up with, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake."
"Here, have some cooking oil and a teaspoon of vanilla," her Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter.
"How about a couple of raw eggs or a tablespoon of butter?" "Gross, Mom!"
"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Mom, those are all yucky!"
And the mother replies: "Yes, all those things do seem pretty “yucky” on their own but without them – there would be no cake. They are just ingredients, and when they’re processed in the right way, they make a truly delicious cake!
The cake is the accumulation of the ingredients added. Every ingredient you leave out - leaves you with less of a cake.
Everything in this life comes down to how we think! (Old Tom Grbich proverb)
How would your life change if you saw the obstacles and hardships you face, as essential ingredients in making you the best you can be, instead of seeing them as “one more lousy rock in the road?”
Interestingly, the greatest growth / progress that humanity has ever enjoyed, has almost always come out of the greatest adversity.
Often, the things that we encounter are not our choice and I know there are many spiritualists would disagree with that. I’m willing to concede that the choice is ours – made at another level, but it certainly is not the average person’s (conscious) choice to be raped, robbed, mugged, or to lose a job just after buying that new car or house!
Choice is less a matter of “what happens to us,” as it is “how we deal with what happens to us. Instead of immersing ourselves in the “overwhelming problems of life,” perhaps we could make ourselves grateful for the learning opportunities presented.
Be grateful – when you look at the adversity that some of us are facing or have faced in this life, you have to appreciate that God/the Universe obviously plans for us to be one hell of a cake! And why would you possibly be angry or sad about that? When you can look at things this way your problems will have an entirely different face.
When an event is imposed upon us, it helps immensely to step back and look at what possible good we could make of the situation; and ask “What outcome would we need, in order to be able to say that the challenge was worth it?”
I wish upon each of you, all of the ingredients to make you the best cake possible and…
Life will often not be the party we might hope for, but while we’re here we might as well dance.
